Using staged scenes and digital interventions, Chilean artist Rodrigo Valenzuela’s photography, video and installation work is rooted in the contradictory traditions of documentary and fiction, often involving narratives around immigration and the working class. Valenzuela completed an art history degree at the University of Chile in 2004, then worked in construction as undocumented worker while making art over his first decade in the United States, completing an MFA at the University of Washington in 2012. Valenzuela’s residencies include a Core Fellowship at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Skowhegan; Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts; the Center for Photography at Woodstock; and the Kala Art Institute, Berkley. He is the recipient of the Artist Trust Arts Innovator Award, The Stranger Genius award, and Texas Contemporary Award. Recent solo exhibitions include David Shelton Gallery, Houston; Klowden Mann Gallery; Frye Art Museum; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Santiago; envoy enterprises, New York; and Upfor Gallery, Portland, Oregon.
